As World War II comes to an end, Soviet soldiers invade Hungary and sentence hundreds of thousands of people—many of them civilians—to forced labor under the malenki robot (“little work”) program. Irén is one of them; having been forcibly removed from her husband and small children and transplanted to a remote camp, her existence has been reduced to coal mining and trying not to freeze to death in the snow.
